Day 6 - Wyoming, Montana, Bighorn Nat'l Forest, Cody, WY

Day 6

Keyhole State Park Wyoming> Thru Wyoming> Lunch in Montana> Bighorn National Forest> Cody, Wyoming> Yellowstone (very quick)> Motel outside Yellowstone

We woke up very happily in Keyhole State park and made some coffee as we moved slowly watching the boats and fishermen on the reservoir. The lake was amazing but we still had a lot to see so we packed our gear and headed toward Yellowstone, which was only supposed to take about 5 hours. We drove for a couple hours and decided to take a quick stop in Montana for lunch. We climbed up a hill took some photos and moved on.

As we reentered Wyoming we entered into the Bighorn National Forest. These mountains just came straight out of fairly flat land and as we climbed higher and higher up the first mountain the views were incredible. We stopped a few times on the way up but the top was the most spectacular and we were lucky enough to see two hang gliders take off from the top of this mountain… incredible.

We continued through the national forest stopping at some amazing views of mountains, canyons, waterfalls and even stopping for a snowball fight….(yes in july).

We finally reached the end of Bighorn (a stop which we hadn’t planned whatsoever, and continued on to Cody, Wyoming. In Cody, named after Buffalo Bill Cody, we stopped for Mcdonald’s for some much needed recovery and of course wifi. As it started to get late we realized we had to get out of there so we drove to Yellowstone (another 50 miles) and quickly found out that all of the campsites in Yellowstone were full. So we turned around and at this point it was getting pretty dark. On the way back toward Cody there were a few campsites but only hard-sided campervans were allowed because of bears. We drove a little farther and weary from a long day (and a slight fear of bears) we decided to check into a motel for the night rather than camp. Overall it was a very good decision, we cleaned up and rested well prepared to hit Yellowstone the way it should be hit….. hard.
